Stupid things angramainyu says #10

Firstly, the AJAX for BasilMarket’s advertisements is hosted on giantrealms’ server. If you’re going to moan, I’m quite certain they have a contact link for just that purpose.

Angra shows he has no idea what “AJAX” is.

BasilMarket itself does not interact with AdBlock. When your browser receives an HTTP response, it displays hypertext, and ends the transmission of data. The interpretation of the code therein — JavaScript in particular — is the responsibility of your browser. It is physically impossible for BasilMarket to circumvent adblock.

Physically impossible? Nothing physical about any of this.

In this case, his explanation is so badly worded it’s hard to determine what he’s on about, but it is quite possible to block adblock. “BasilMarket itself does not interact with AdBlock” is patent nonsense. Your browser and its plugins, interact with the site you are viewing, it’s their sole purpose for being!

Alternately, XP users may use the “run” command via the start menu to open “notepad %windir%/system32/drivers/etc/hosts” and add the text, “209.85(dot)19.20″ followed by the address of the site on the same line (e.g. 209.85(dot)19.20 check-for-malwarev3.com . Naturally, your browser requests information from a malicious website, which then responds with code that redirects you to its page. By adding that text to your hosts file, your browser sends a request to BasilMarket whenever your browser is about to be redirected to that website.

XP Users? Every version of Windows since 95 has had run.

Blocking a site in that way is overkill, especially when firefox, iron, opera and other browsers can block content. Either way, his description is factually incorrect, it doesn’t redirect to BasilMarket, as far as your browser is concerned that’s where the content is. It’s better to add the block map to localhost anyway.

I really don’t have a comment on this. But for those who are tl;dr:

Angra rambles against the iPhone or droid or something, pulling facts out of his ass and completely failing to understand the platforms and Secure smacks him down.

State of the Site #1: Basil’s Blog Debacle

I find the unintentional parallels between NEXON’s failings, and Basil’s failings in this blog hilarious. If you swap out NEXON for Basil and change a few events over the blog still works.

The whole feature has a security flaw that nobody should ever make. I dare not even hint at the method, because it is so obvious and easy to do. I’m truly astounded that such a flaw made it in. It’s something that even a novice PHP coder wouldn’t make. So I’ll happily vandalise the blog for profit and entertainment. NEXON makes a silly mistake in this event, mrb makes a silly mistake with this blog feature. It fits, I guess.

Anyhow, I know people seem to come down on me as being very negative on Basil, and yes, that’s true. But it’s because I rarely talk about the positives, and yes, there are some; but I find them to be fleeting. Another irony of the blog.

Remember when Maple was mostly balanced, had a nice community and NX didn’t give you advantages over others? I look back with rose tinted glasses, but there were times like that. I was there in 2006~08. But NEXON would go on and prove why the free-to-play cash shop model fails.

Remember when Basil looked nice, had a nice community and being one of the ‘popular’ people didn’t mean much? Again, I look back with rose tinted glasses, but it was like that.  And I was happily a part of it. Now we have a site that looks terrible (to save on bandwidth), that’s covered in horrible adverts (apparently because the hosting is expensive), and a community that is equally obnoxious and vulgar. Parody threads, overuse of memes and the over reactionary backlash from the administration seems to be a recent thing. Hell, it’s almost daily where I find a new thing put on the filter, and wonder why. Recently, my own domain was added.

I’ve remained mostly civil to Bogdan, I know more about him than most, we talk sometimes on Meebo (BasilIM) about the highs and lows of being site admins and other topics. Call my vandalism of his blog some out of the norm hijinks.

Another daily occurrence are the random events that seem to degrade the site. Currently there are two people on the “team” that I consider to be highly inappropriate. I won’t name them here, but you can probably guess who I am referring to. It seems that having a personality of a professional troll is okay as long as you can perform your other duties. I disagree, I think a good personality is required for such a role.

The site used to be pretty ugly in 2005, improved a lot by 2006, peaked in 2007, and then went down hill fast. Look at it now, the menu is probably one of the most unfriendly interfaces I’ve ever seen on a site. mrb doesn’t seem to care. My theme, with help from a friend, restores the dropdowns and colour to the site. Makes the site appeal to the eyes again.

Nobody really quits, I half heartedly tried in July, and it didn’t really happen. Since November of last year, I’ve made over 1900 posts, more than any other site I’m a member of. But my post count isn’t increasing as fast as it once did. A shame. I miss the site I once knew.

Apologies in advance for spelling and grammar. It’s 4am right now.

Logically, splitting a string into two lines should produce the same effect as escape-n, therefore removing newlines should be achieved by removing escape-n, should it not? Yet removing newlines by means of any PHP function is ineffectual. Is there anything that can be done?

There are many better sites to ask a question about PHP. I can’t think of a worst place to ask a question like that, and worse, I had to re-read that to work out what it meant. It doesn’t help that you can’t say \n on BasilMarket.

This application is capable of reading a hundred song names, then returning their respective albums in a matter of seconds. However, it depends entirely on another website — any website which lists songs, artists and albums within the same page — to function. Wryly, even Last.fm is unreliable for this task. Find for me any suitable website, and I will release this web application to the public, perhaps its source code as well.

I’m lost for words. Based on his inane PHP questions on BM, I seriously doubt anything like that will be produced. I dread to think how bad the source would be. Probably scraping Wikipedia and str_replace-ing content out. Time will tell.

Downloading an ActiveX plugin, permitting a malicious Java applet or using a browser with unresolved exploits will allow hackers to access your computer. However, BasilMarket is entirely free of any exploitable code. It is impossible to become infected by visiting BasilMarket.

ActiveX – Yes!

Java applets – Yes!

Browser exploits – Yes!

BM free of exploits – Do’h! BM has adverts that could be exploited, and has and continues to be vulnerable to cross site scripting.

Angra successfully trolls a user.

To exemplify my earlier post, this, as absurd as it is, is a partially valid opinion for now, as bisexuality hasn’t yet been proven. Homosexuality, however, can; saying “all homosexuals are sexually confused” is equivalent to saying “science is confused.”

@ Above

The brain is entirely in tact. Certain areas are super-developed, and seem to have an altered function. “What might be right for you, may not be right for some,” I believe; homosexuality is different, but in no way inferior to heterosexuality.

What could he possibly mean by “bisexuality hasn’t yet been proven”? Do the millions of people who identify as bisexual not exist? Maybe they’re lying? It’s a mystery. And to then to directly say that homosexuality has been proven is just incredible.

“The brain is entirely in tact” – Again, no clue. Maybe he meant “intact”. That still doesn’t make sense.

“Certain areas are super-developed, and seem to have an altered function.” Is he reading from the neuroscience journal from the X-Men universe? No, maybe worse, a live journal fan fiction. “Super-developed” is the worst colloquialism he could use here.

Angra points out a user is delusional, and although I would argue rightfully so he does it in his normal patronising manner, pushing it very close to the lines of a personal attack. Then he gets called out on this, and in his first act of moderator abuse deletes his post and posts that quoted him as seen by the gap in posts, instead of arguing his point. It’s also highly amusing to see him reference “creepypasta”, which is probably a suspend-able offence.

Found in a thread asking: How does one define love?

An inconvenient slurry of useless neurotransmitters.

Let’s ignore the evolutionary advantages of a strong desire to reproduce.

Found in a thread asking: Is it possible to hack Google?

“Hacked” is a term used by those who do not understand its nature. Can google be abused by means inaccessible to the masses? Yes, just round up a couple dozens of thousands of zombie computers. Often, there is an array of hacking methods for every type of an attack. Anyone who does not understand that, probably does not understand HTML. “Hack” is as general, vague and ignorant as can be.

Understanding HTML is hardly relevant to hacking a site like Google, I’m at a loss to why he brings it up. Maybe to set a benchmark of knowledge needed to hack websites. But HTML is child’s play compared to actual programming languages.

Found in a thread asking: What race are you?

I suppose Africa, South America, as well as a large portion of Canada, Australia, and the United States are negligible, then?

I’ve read this several times and I still can’t work out what he means. I think he refers to how few options there are on the poll… which also happens to be the maximum allowed. Trolls trolling trolls.

I think this is my shortest greasemonkey script, at just 58 characters, or 55 excluding spaces. It simply redirects you to where you want to go, instead of having to deal with that page.

So, I figured I better write something about this little mini-series of blogs. Well, a few months ago now, me and a few of my friends first noticed Angramainyu appearing in the tech and chat forums.

In the tech forums he often posted obfuscated responses, like this

Ignoring the misspelling of Javascript, twice, this post is confusing to people who aren’t fully aware of what PHP is, or what “echoes” means in this context. Sometimes he posts plain wrong information.

Then there was the debacle of should BasilMarket become XHTML?

Yes, in an ideal work we’d all be using perfect XHTML, but this isn’t a perfect world. Contrary to his last emboldened paragraph, browsers are getting better at parsing bad HTML. Behind the shiny surface of many sites, there is a mess of code left behind from past revisions and human error. A browser that refuses to ignore bad HTML and instead gives an error message isn’t going to go over very well as compared to one that does the best it can. Most end users have no clue to what the difference is to HTML, XHTML and CSS.

Furthermore, the idea of just “becoming” XHTML isn’t a fast and easy task, and suggesting that BM just “becomes” XHTML is patronising and understating a difficult task to people who as mentioned above, probably won’t have enough knowledge to comment on it.

Hilariously, he gets called out on the fact he made so many silly tech threads around that time… …and eventually runs away when he gets tired.

There are also many cases, of him sucking up, for example to Mindstormer, and mrbasil. Unfortunately due to the way BM purges old posts often, I can’t find any more examples to put here.

And of course, who could forget, the post that started this off, with debunking: Regenerating stupidity, and the end of trolling. I updated that post when I was able to find the thread before Angra blanked it. Enjoy.

Just go back into the tech section circa July/ August ‘09, and you’ll find many more examples of this. Lately, it’s been toned down, unfortunately, right around the same time I started to blog about it. Oh well.
